Last minute, EASY costumes for parents - North Houston Moms

Halloween is just around the corner, and sometimes life gets busy — leaving little time for elaborate costumes. Luckily, you don’t need to run to a store or spend a fortune to dress up. With a few items you probably already have at home, parents can pull together fun, creative, and last-minute Halloween looks in no time!

1. Ghost

  • What you need: A plain white sheet.

  • How to do it: Cut holes for eyes. Optional: add a hat, scarf, or drawn-on mouth to personalize.

2. Cat

  • What you need: Black clothes, eyeliner or face paint.

  • How to do it: Draw whiskers and a nose, use a headband with makeshift ears (paper, felt, or cut from a sock).

3. Tourist

  • What you need: Hawaiian shirt or bright t-shirt, shorts, sunglasses, hat, camera (or phone on a strap).

  • How to do it: Add socks with sandals and a map for extra humor.

4. Mummy

  • What you need: Toilet paper or white cloth strips, neutral clothes underneath.

  • How to do it: Wrap loosely around arms and legs — not too tight.

5. Scarecrow

  • What you need: Plaid shirt, jeans, straw hat (or any wide-brim hat), optional scarf.

  • How to do it: Stuff shirt with crumpled paper or old fabric for “straw.” Use eyeliner for stitched mouth.

6. Nerd / Geek

  • What you need: Button-down shirt tucked in, suspenders or belt, glasses (tape on middle optional), high socks.

  • How to do it: Add a notebook or calculator as a prop.

7. 80s / 90s Throwback

  • What you need: Bright colors, leggings, oversized shirt or sweater, scrunchie, or big hair.

  • How to do it: Mix patterns and add any funky accessories you have.

8. Zombie

  • What you need: Old clothes you don’t mind tearing a bit, makeup or dark eyeliner.

  • How to do it: Rip clothes slightly, smudge makeup or face powder, add dark circles around eyes, optional fake blood (ketchup works).

9. Superhero (DIY)

  • What you need: Solid color t-shirt and pants, paper or fabric for emblem or cape.

  • How to do it: Draw your initial on a shirt and tie a towel or scarf as a cape.

10. “Pun” Costume Ideas (fun and clever, minimal effort)

  • Ceiling Fan: Wear a shirt that says “Go Ceilings!” and carry pom-poms.

  • Cereal Killer: Attach mini cereal boxes to a shirt with plastic knives (or spoons) stuck in.

  • Smarty Pants: Tape or pin candy Smarties all over your pants.
